Volume to 11

Any party featuring Memphis' own wall-of-sound enthusiasts the Magic Kids is going to be a good party. But the event planners at Playhouse on the Square aren't content throwing a party that's merely good. Curtain Up, which has become an annual fund-raising event for Playhouse, is five parties under one roof. In addition to an onstage dance party with the Magic Kids (complete with a Red Bull bar and Jell-O shots for clubby types), there will be a zydeco martini lounge showcasing Fille Catatonique's experimental blend of accordions, vocals, and rattling percussion. The theater cafe will be transformed into a honky-tonk serving beer, sliders, and the "country-jazzy-grassy-tonk" sounds of Nay Nay and the Do-Right Boys (featuring POTS music director Renee Kemper). For those who like a little danger with their fun, there will be a password-protected speakeasy underneath the stage with casino games and vaudeville-inspired entertainment by Black Max, a theatrical band whose sound mixes classic cabaret with classic rock. If that's not enough, there will be a wine and cheese party in the Playhouse lobby that will evolve into a champagne and dessert party over the course of the evening.

Playhouse on the Square's communications director Lisa Lynch says it was important to make each of the parties unique and to lower the ticket prices from years past to encourage as much participation as possible.

Playhouse on the Square's Curtain Up Party 11/11/11. Tickets are $75 per person or $60 per person for a group of 10 or more. Proceeds benefit Playhouse on the Square. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 726-4656 or visit playhouseonthesquare.org.
