Water Liars at 1372 Overton Park

Water Liars — an indie-rock duo of singer-guitarist Justin Kinkel-Schuster and drummer Andrew Bryant — weren't quite a real band when they recorded their 2012 debut, Phantom Limb, over a weekend in Bryant's hometown of Pittsboro, Mississippi, with the then St. Louis-based Kinkel-Schuster visting. But the band's second album, Wyoming, released last week, was recorded in the duo's new joint home base, Water Valley, Mississippi, and presents the duo as a fully committed band. The album's prevailing tone is that of intimate, skeletal twang, a sound occasionally worked over by bits of noise, drone, and muffled gallop. Water Liars play Memphis this week, at 1372 Overton Park — the onetime "Lucero loft" in Crosstown — on Sunday, March 17th.
