Conventional wisdom has it that Barbecue Fest is no fun unless you’re on a team or know someone on a team. But there are those among us who prefer a more moderate approach to the WCBCC (going “half-hog,” as it were), and that’s where the People’s Choice and the Cooker’s Caravan come in. For $4, visitors to the People’s Choice tent get to judge five samples of barbecue. The Cooker’s Caravan is a guided tour of the contest, during which participants visit team tents and maybe, grill master willing, pick up a tip or two on barbecuing. The tours are every 30 minutes from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
Thursday’s events include the Miss Piggy Idol contest, starting at 6 p.m. On Friday, Papa Top’s West Coast Turnaround, featuring the Flyer’s Chris Davis, performs at 5:10 p.m., and awards will be given out in the “Anything But” category of the contest at 6:30 p.m. Saturday wraps up with the championship awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m. and a concert by Eddie Floyd at 8 p.m.
