You probably know Memphis’ own Joey “Joecephus” Killingsworth from his hard rocking solo project Joecephus and the George Jonestown Massacre. But his latest work is something of a departure for Joecephus. Working with producer Luke John, he crafted Late Nights, Early Morning to be quieter and more reflective than the bandโs usual sound.
In discussing the video with director Chris McCoy, Killingsworth reflected on the ups and downs of being on the road โ the long night drives and the weird mixture of exhaustion and peace that comes when home is near. McCoy, who is the Flyerโs Film/TV editor and who plays in the band 1,000 Lights with Killingsworth, previously collaborated on the madcap “Voices” video. For this one, McCoy says he was inspired by the film noir stylings of Val Lawton and Jacques Tourneur. He credits videographer and editor (and spouse) Laura Jean Hocking with much of the filmโs moody feel. โLJ layered in the night-driving images and the strings of bokeh lights,โ McCoy says. โSheโs like a painter with layered transparencies, and I was very glad to be able to turn her loose on this one.โ
Here’s the world premiere of ‘Days Gone By”!
