The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art announced that it will open its new Downtown campus to the public in December 2026. Once there, it will take the name of the Memphis Art Museum.

Already both the oldest and largest art museum in Tennessee, with more than 10,000 works in its collection, the museum will expand its existing gallery space by 50 percent in its new location while offering more art-filled free public spaces, including a community courtyard and rooftop sculpture garden, and โ€œart park in the skyโ€ as a press release refers to it.

Designed by Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron and Memphisโ€™ archimania, the building will occupy an entire city block.

โ€œMemphis has a long history as a vibrant hub for art and culture. This expansive and innovative new campus will further reinforce the cityโ€™s status as a global cultural destination,โ€ said Zoe Kahr, executive director of the Memphis Art Museum, in a press release. โ€œWe look forward to welcoming visitors to experience the very best of what Memphis has to offer, in 2026, and for years to come.โ€

This news of the museumโ€™s Downtown opening date follows the announcement of Patricia Lee Daigleโ€™s appointment as chief curator. Daigle joined the museum team in 2021 as associate curator of modern and contemporary art, and in her role organized acclaimed exhibitions such โ€œHarmonia Rosales: Master Narrative,โ€ โ€œIn the Moment: Art from the 1950s to Now,โ€ and โ€œTommy Kha: Eye Is Another.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s an incredible honor to step into this role at such a defining moment for the museum,โ€ Daigle said in a separate release. โ€œHaving been part of the team for several years, Iโ€™ve seen firsthand how our work connects people through art and how deeply this museum matters to Memphis. โ€ฆ This move isnโ€™t just about a new building โ€” itโ€™s about expanding our reach, deepening our relationships, and continuing to serve as a place where art and community meet.โ€
