Memphis has never lacked for creative collisions, but “Books on Tap” at Lamplighter Lounge offers a particularly charming one. On April 21st, the Midtown staple hosts St. Rita’s Traveling Bookstore and Textual Apothecary, a one-of-a-kind mobile bookshop bringing stories — and story lovers — together in an unexpected setting.

For Lamplighter co-owner Laurel Cannito, the spark was immediate. When bookstore owner Rita Collins reached out about parking her literary caravan outside the bar, Cannito saw more than a pop-up — she saw a kindred spirit. Inspired by John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley, Cannito connected with Collins’ wanderlust and her mission to carry the written word across the country. “It feels magical,” Cannito says, likening the bookstore to a traveling carnival — unusual, a little romantic, and deeply rooted in human connection.

That sense of connection shapes the evening. Collins’ collection spans genres and price points — biographies, poetry, cookbooks, children’s titles, and books in multiple languages — inviting curious browsers and serious readers alike. But “Books on Tap” goes beyond browsing.

Enter the ZINE GIRLS, a Memphis-based book club and zine collective that will be releasing a new issue and offering readings from their latest work. Their presence, Cannito notes, challenges the stereotype of the “stuffy” book club. “They’re just friends who love getting together to create,” she says — exactly the kind of energy she hopes will inspire others to start their own literary circles.

Music comes courtesy of Sweet Darlin’, a local favorite known for lyric-driven rock and a history of book-centered performances. It’s a natural fit, especially with band members who share a love of libraries and language.

Inside, the Lamplighter will match the vibe with food and drink specials, plus non-alcoholic options like house-brewed teas and cold brew. The event also doubles as a soft launch for the venue’s forthcoming “Lampy Library,” a cozy, in-house book nook Cannito and co-owner Chuck Wenzler have been building from their personal collections.

Ultimately, “Books on Tap” is about blending worlds — daytime and nightlife, music and literature, strangers and soon-to-be friends. Or, as Cannito puts it, creating a space where books aren’t a novelty, but part of everyday life.
