Fitness Ground Zero, For Me

Starting from health and fitness ground zero, I have nowhere to go but up (or down, depending on which measurements we’re talking about). What did ground zero look like for me? Well, I had some issues with high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol - taking medication for both. And I was only exercising once a month.

If I am being honest, I wasn’t a lost cause. I am not un-fit and hadn’t gotten to the point where I couldn’t exercise, I had just gotten out of the habit over the years. But in the recent months, I pulled my bike out and had it tuned-up. I joined this cause. And I have made the commitment to change.

A bit part of my journey toward change will happen at the Hope & Healing Center. When I joined H&H, I thought I was joining a gym, but instead, they offer something much more complex – nutritional counseling and classes, fitness staff to coach and guide you along a personalized work-out plan and a huge spectrum of kids and family classes – should that ever become important to me. And the racquetball courts were a nice surprise.

So, my figurative first step was accomplished by just showing up for the H&H intake process and 2-step process, the first step consists of touring the facility, learning what to expect and how to find help/answers when I need them. I took that step easily – I was more than ready and willing. I was spiritually present. And now, mentally and physically welcoming of the challenge.

Step two was an overall physical evaluation with trainer: resting BP, height, weight. Then cardio routine consisting of: fast walk on treadmill for 10 min (3.5 mph – no problem); stationary bike for 12 min (18-19 mph – no problem) and elliptical trainer – which I struggled to complete 7 min. Don’t know how it measured – all I knew was that I just wanted off!

The plan: stick with above cardio program for 30 days– exercising 2 or 3 times per week. Hope & Healing trainers will chart progress and offer guidance to improve workout performance. After cardio health is on track a strength program will be added to start building muscle mass. Then a foundation to build on is in place.

As for Hope & Healing: they want people to come back and it shows. Staff is enthusiastic and genuinely engaged, always putting an emphasis on being fit mentally, spiritually, and physically. And it is nice to see families at the gym-- getting a head start on the next generation of healthy Memphians.

Bonus – there are no mirrors in H&H fitness center, a nice touch. The dress code encourages modesty and comfort. Lockers and showers are available. H&H hours are: 6am-8pm Monday, Tuesday & Thursday; 6am-1:30pm / 4pm-8pm Wednesday, 6am-2pm Friday and 7am-2pm Saturday, closed all day on Sunday.
