Wild Oats to Whole Foods: An Update

Posted By on Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 8:47 PM

ab3c/1249005346-meat_case.jpgThe Wild Oats/Whole Foods transition was completed in October 2008. We checked in for an update.

In addition to more seating for in-store dining, Whole Foods carries products from more than 22 local producers… and not just fruits and veggies. “We have local cheese, raw food, body care, and honey,” says Liza Burke, the marketing team leader at the store. “And we are actively seeking additional local producers.“ Customers curious about the origin of local products can review a map that is located at the front of the store.

While the fundamental core values of the two merged stores are similar, some differences remain.

Culinary Tourism Map

The Shaws created a West Tennessee Culinary Tourism Map, featuring more than 100 locally owned restaurants in the area. (Memphians, don't get mad. They didn't have any enough space to include Shelby County.) The map is in PDF form and can be downloaded for printing.

Isa's Pistachio Cake: a Story of Community

Posted By on Tue, Jul 28, 2009 at 11:02 AM

ce6a/1248797504-isa.jpgIsa's Pistachio Cake is as much a product of Isaura Amill's present community as it is a tribute to her heritage. The recipe for this buttery sweet specialty hails from Puerto Rico, where Isa was born and where her mother began selling the cakes 15 years ago. Seven years later, when Isa came to the United States, she brought the recipe with her but wasn't necessarily interested in baking the cakes for sale. “It’s just always been the Christmas gift that I give to people,” she says.

What's Cooking, Three 6 Mafia?

Posted By on Mon, Jul 27, 2009 at 6:54 PM

The members of Three 6 Mafia are currently busy putting the finishing touches on their next record, scheduled to be released on November 24th. But these enthusiastic cooks and eaters took the time, via e-mail, to tell Hungry Memphis what else is on their plates.

Is it true you're pitching a reality cooking show?
Yes, we are. It's called Cookin' Ain't Easy.

What's the concept?
It's about Three 6 Mafia and friends trying to be chefs. Cooking isn't as easy as it looks on TV! lol.

Soul Food Festival Saturday

Posted By on Mon, Jul 27, 2009 at 10:42 AM

“You will experience some of the best ribs, chicken, macaroni and cheese, greens, and turkey legs from all over the country,” says Patrick Williams of the Soul Food Festival, being held Saturday, starting at 3 p.m., at Shelby Farms. “It will be a very tasteful experience.”

The Soul Food Festival has been around for several years and travels around the country, making stops in cities such as Jacksonville, Florida, Louisville, Kentucky, Cleveland, Ohio, and Kansas City, Missouri, drawing as many as 10,000 people, Williams estimates. This is the first time, however, it will be in Memphis.

“We always wanted to come to Memphis,” Williams says, “but we didn’t know how well received we’d be in a blues market. Boy, were we wrong!”

The festival is presented by the Kinfolks Foundation, which fosters learning in underprivileged children and young adults.

In addition to the food, there will also be live music from performers such as Sisqo and Peabo Bryson.

Williams explains that the event is geared toward those 30 and over. “It will be an evening of reunion, a chance to mingle among grown folks.”

Advanced tickets are $28. For more information, go to

Food Inc.: Hungry Memphis Review

Posted By on Sat, Jul 25, 2009 at 9:59 AM

As I was watching Food Inc., I found myself thinking of the “Wonder Twins” from the Super Friends show from the late-’70s.

Here’s my Food Inc. version: journalists/twins Eric Schlosser and Michael Pollan bump fists. Wonder Twins power activate! Form of, declares Schlosser, an appetite killer! Pollan takes his turn: Form of, a dose of lecturing!

Chocolate & Tequila

Posted By on Fri, Jul 24, 2009 at 4:27 PM

So, I mentioned in a previous post about the Flyer's 901 Tequila Cocktail Contest(!) that I was thinking of mixing a chocolate liquor with tequila for the Mud Island Iced Tea. My thinking was the chocolate would play off the word "mud."

Great Wines Weekly Wine Tasting

Posted By on Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 8:19 PM

5a26/1248312544-wine.jpgFor those of us who can’t pronounce the words vignoble and coulure or understand what they actually mean, navigating through the many varieties of wine can be mysterious and overwhelming.

Gary Burhop, owner of Great Wines, hopes to help alleviate that vino-induced anxiety by offering weekly wine tastings at Salsa Restaurant on Saturdays from 1-3 p.m. through September 12th. Each week features a specific varietal of wine (Merlot, Riesling, etc.) and gives novices and experts the opportunity to experience the wide range of wines available.

What's the Score, Andy Wise?

Posted By on Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 12:07 PM

ec1d/1248283641-andywise.jpgAndy Wise recently took over the “Restaurant Scorecard” segment for Action News 5. But before Andy, restaurant visits were not always pleasant for the Channel 5 Scorecard crew. They were less than welcome in many area restaurants. Persona non grata. Not on the guest list. Don’t let the swinging kitchen doors hit you on the way out.

Which is why Andy and his crew added a positive element to the segment: a glowing review of worthy restaurants. Guided by viewer input, the "Restaurant Scorecard" highlights at least one successful area restaurant each week. Now, Andy gives us the good with the bad with the pink-slime ugly.

How long have you been a restaurant watchdog?
Not very long. I took over the “Scorecard” segment the first week of January this year, but it’s been a mainstay on Action News 5 for years.

Timberlake's Tequila & Contest!

6e53/1248196722-drank.jpgWhen I told photographer Justin Fox Burks my plans to mix a chocolate liquor with Justin Timberlake's recently released 901 Silver Tequila, he literally flinched!

You see, I was working on something I was going to call a "Mud Island Iced Tea."

Surviving Your Leftovers

Posted By on Tue, Jul 21, 2009 at 11:16 AM

24e2/1248193354-tupperware-2.jpgI’m convinced there are two types of people in the world: leftover people and non-leftover people. Some people (myself included) have no problem eating food days after it was initially prepared. And others will refuse to touch anything more than 10 minutes removed from a pan.
