Vegetables & the City

Posted By on Sat, Aug 8, 2009 at 8:35 PM

Spotted last summer in the alley behind the Flyer’s building was a tomato plant — a fantastic plant bearing some 30 tomatoes.

My coworker Brenda waited patiently for someone to pick them, and when that never happened, she plucked the fruits herself.

And earlier this summer, Brenda noticed a lone corn stalk sporting an ear of corn on Wagner Place.

Brenda’s theory is that both these plants were the result of the bird/seed circle of life. I, on the other hand am so head-deep in pop-culture ephemera, I thought, guerrilla gardening!

So who’s right on this? Honestly, unless someone fesses up to planting the tomatoes and corn, I can’t say … but, stay tuned, this one is a two-parter.
