A Visit to Whiskers Wine & Spirits

Posted By on Thu, Dec 31, 2009 at 5:22 PM

Several months ago, Ben Carter of Benito's Wine Reviews told me about Whiskers Wine & Spirits, a pet-friendly liquor store in Cordova. I finally had a chance to stop by today and meet the owner Glenda Kilpatrick.

Kilpatrick opened the store two years ago. Whiskers was the nickname of her cat Sir Sherman Tank. She says he got the moniker after an unfortunate grooming accident involving his whiskers.

A photo of Whiskers, who died before the store opened, is featured on the Rainbow Bridge wall. His portrait is surrounded by other photos of dearly departed pets owned by the store's patrons.

Also in keeping with the theme, .50 cents from every bottle sold of certain animal-named wines (Dog House, Fat Cat, Chateau La Paws, among them) goes to the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County.

Tabby Jack Daniels is a fixture of the store. He wasn't there when I stopped by because Kilpatrick felt the New Year's Eve traffic would be too much.

"He's sweet, sweet, sweet," Kilpatrick says. "He greets all the customers. He's like a dog."
