Chocolate Gravy

Was chocolate gravy part of your childhood?

I have never had it or seen it, just read about it. Seems this thick sauce — cocoa powder, butter, sugar, flour — was a staple in some but not all Southern homes.

In any case, former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson is getting mileage out of the treat to promote the release of his book Teaching the Pig to Dance.

Chocolate gravy is generally served over biscuits. Thompson's memories of how it was served in his home is a bit different.

From a Hannity transcript:

HANNITY: A different mentality we have today.

I can't believe you ate possum. You ate possum? What is with that?

THOMPSON: Only with chocolate gravy.

HANNITY: Chocolate gravy? Every week you said you ate it.
