Lunch at The Port

Posted By on Wed, Jul 21, 2010 at 2:43 PM

We arrived today at The Port on President's Island with a plan.

After the post on country fried steak*, word came that the Port served the granddaddy of them all, so we had to check it out.

Sure enough, Giant Country Fried Steak ($8.95) was on the menu, but the person who was supposed to eat the Giant went for the buffet ($6.99) instead ...

... And then got country fried steak as well as mashed potatoes, beans, and cornbread. The drink was included with the price.

Not a lot of vegetarian options, so I got a grilled cheese sandwich with a side of onion rings. (With drink and tax: $6.23.)

Other menu items: The Tow "Boat" Special, billed as "the largest burger on the Mississippi ($7.95); gyro sandwich ($3.95); pork chops ($8.95); and grain-fed catfish ($8.95).

Nothing fancy, really, and probably not all that good for you. But we agreed we would definitely go back because the Port has a lot to recommend it. It's close-by and cheap, and the food is pretty tasty and the atmosphere is laid back.

The Port, 1039 Harbor Avenue on President's Island (942-0121)

*This will be the last time I'm writing about country fried steak for a while, unless there's some breaking country fried steak news.
