Last week I stopped by Republic Coffee for lunch and ordered the Pedro, a nice barbecue-style sandwich with tofu, slaw, and chipolte sauce ($7).

Sandwiches come with a choice of side — carrot souffle, fruit, mac & cheese, among them — but I opted for the cheese grits because I always, without fail, order cheese grits when I see them on the menu.

I wouldn't say that cheese grits are my favorite dish, but I'm always on the look out for good ones — not the sad instant grits served with a slab of cheese on top.

For my friend, her Always is the Philly cheesesteak. My brother's is bread pudding. What's yours?

Republic's grits are excellent, btw. They're mixed of gouda and cheddar and topped with a dusting of paprika.
