A Better Memphis, Food-Wise

Posted By on Tue, Jun 14, 2011 at 1:48 PM

John Branston lists 50 small ideas for a better Memphis over at his City Beat blog. A handful of those ideas are food-related.

Among them ... boiled peanuts.

Yuck. I cannot stand boiled peanuts. Branston says I'm not redneck enough to appreciate them, but I am plenty redneck.

But on to those food ideas and a few of my own ...

Number 38 is nutritional education. Yes! And more school garden programs.

Number 7 is a German restaurant. Mary's German Restaurant is open in Collierville.

30. Water fountains that work in public places and 29. Cheap bottled water on the river. Yes to 30. and no to 29.

And a few more ideas ...

Also, I miss having Fratelli's and Alice's in South Main.

Perhaps some artisan ice cream to join the fro-yo?

More noodle bowl places.

A Miss Cordelia's for Midtown in the site of the Easy Way on Cleveland.

Something crunch-y and co-op-y for the Overton Park Pizza site.

These are off the top of my head, perhaps pie-in-the-sky, and admittedly Midtown and downtown-centric. Put your ideas for improving Memphis food-wise in the comments.
