Burger King's BBQ

Posted By on Fri, Jul 27, 2012 at 11:48 AM

As a native Memphian, I couldn't help but want to test Burger King's summer barbecue menu to see how it held up. Unfortunately, by the time I got around to it, the Memphis BBQ pulled pork sandwich was not on the menu, so I decided to drown my disappointment with a Bacon Sundae ($2.99).

I ordered the Texas BBQ Whopper ($3.99) and the Carolina Chicken Tendergrill ($4.49) (Both varieties of BBQ can be made into a Whopper or tendergrill.) Unfortunately, both sandwiches were bland and hardly recognizable as barbecue. Neither sauce had any real heat, and both were around the consistency of watered down ketchup. The Texas Whopper at least had jalapenos to add some much needed heat, but, in the end, both sandwiches fall flat on their face.

Which is why the Bacon Sundae tasted all the sweeter. After eating as much of those two unhappy sandwiches as I could stand, this bacon topped, ice cream confection served as a much needed reprieve from half baked attempts at food. The bacon used in this sundae wasn't the limp, pitiful excuses for bacon usually served in a fast food setting; this bacon can actually stand on its own (see: picture). Everything else about this sundae was normal; the ice cream and toppings were a little too sweet just like most fast food ice cream, but the bacon balanced out all that sugar to create something that was surprisingly delicious.

While I probably won't remember those other two sandwiches (whatever they were called), I will always remember the bacon sundae, and hope that Burger King puts it on their permanent menu.
