Stop Litter With Litter

Posted By on Wed, May 6, 2009 at 2:30 PM

The other day I was at the inspection station and after my car passed all the rigorous tests, I was handed the paper that you take with you to the clerk's office.

I was also handed this ...

a piece of cardstock telling me that "Tennessee's Had Enough" with litter.

I'm sorry — when I see this, what I see is a piece of litter. They're giving everyone these at the inspection stations. What do they think we're going to do with them?

Okay, yes, in my case, I'm going to scan it in and post it to my blog, so, okay, I guess their plan worked. This time. But everyone else is going to discard it, whether by recycling it, throwing it in the trash, or throwing it somewhere else. I mean, they're handing it to people in their cars.

In all honesty, I remember getting this thing last year, too, and it boggled my mind then. Like you want us not to litter so you're giving us a piece of trash? What is this, some kind a test?

The back of the flier has some helpful hints to stop litter — including "Apply peer pressure to others to follow the law" — but I think they have missed this one:

Don't give people stupid pieces of paper that they're going to throw away.
