Gonerfest Friday: Straight Arrows, Aquafuzz, The Gories

Posted By on Fri, Sep 23, 2011 at 10:12 AM

Day two of local independent garage-punk label/store Goner Records' underground music festival Gonerfest boasts what is possibly the most highly anticipated line-up of the four day event.

Things get started early with a afternoon blowout and beer bust at the Buccaneer Lounge that kicks off at 2:30 p.m. and features performances by Goner co-owner Zac Ives' new outfit Sharp Balloons, Gonerfest regular Ryan Rousseau, and Austrailian psych-rockers Straight Arrows.

Back at The Hi-Tone Cafe, Harlan T. Bobo's newly re-christened "rock band" Aquafuzz opens the show at 9 p.m. and should not be missed. But the main attraction for most folks will likely be the headlining set by the recently re-united Detroit, MI trio The Gories.

The Gories were a late '80s/early '90s underground phenomenon whose popularity has only increased since disbanding in 1993. Along with local heroes The Oblivians, the band is often credited with pioneering the infusion of blues elements into punk rock music.
