Catching Up With William Stull

Last month, Memphis roots/garage-rocker and sometime one-man-band William Stull released a fine new LP, Self Titled Record, on the new-ish local indie label Soul Patch Music.

Stull spoke to the Flyer this week via email about his new record, his fierce-yet-musical scream, and the new material he's got in the works.

Flyer: How did you get into writing and performing music?

Stull: Well, I come from a musical family where everyone plays something. I started playing the drums first because my grandpa taught me. Then later I got into playing the guitar through my dad.

How did you put together Self Titled Record?

The new record was written and recorded live by me in about 2 hours on a 1970s Panasonic one-track tape recorder in my bedroom, and it mixed/mastered by Andrew McCalla.

Where does your intense scream coming from?

Listening to Ray Michelsen of the Sonics, Rob Tyner of the MC5 and, Jad Fair of Half Japanese are definitely where that comes from. But it was one of those things I'd never done before, and I was just trying to push my voice as hard as I could and opened my mouth and out it came.

Do you prefer working with a band or playing by yourself?

I most definitely would rather play with a drummer. I was doing the one man band thing for a bit there and would just be dead by the end of the set from all the work, so I asked Justin Toland (singer/guitarist of the Dirty Streets) to fill in for me until I found a drummer. He's been playing with me since.

Even though you just put a record out, I hear you have more new stuff in the works. What's that going to be like?

I recorded a new album about two weeks ago with Andrew McCalla at his studio in Midtown. It's a full band album because it kind of had to be. The new album is a lot more fuzzy and heavier than the last. I tried doing it like the last one and it just felt like it was lacking so much sound and needed the full set up. I'm hoping to have that record out by April and have started writing a third album that I hope to have out by next October.
