Catching Up With Star & Micey

Posted By on Fri, Apr 19, 2013 at 6:54 PM

In recent years, the local indie-pop group Star & Micey has seen its stock rise from relative obscurity to one of the most consistently enjoyable and hardest-working acts in town. The group's 2012 E.P. I Can't Wait earned the band rave reviews from both critics and fans, as well as slots on high-profile national music festivals such as the Folk Alliance Conference and South By Southwest.

This Sunday, April 21, Star & Micey will perform a special last-minute show at The Poplar Lounge. Singer/guitarist Josh Cosby spoke to the Flyer this week about all that's been going on with the group and more.

Memphis Flyer: What have you guys been up to since last we spoke?

Cosby: We went to Canada for the Folk Conference and it was beautiful - we found a manager and a booking agent there. Then we went to Austin and broke our backs, but made an impact. Now we're back home in Memphis.

How was South By Southwest, specifically?

Amazing! We played sixteen shows in five days. Three to four shows a day. It became zen-like. You know how when you exercise the rest of the day becomes smooth? It all became like that. We got a chance to play on the Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows stage. To meet and perform for him was an amazing thing. I felt like we transformed the crowds by the end of the shows to a stomping revival. That felt great and gave us faith in what we are doing.

How do you feel about I Can't Wait now that you've had some time to live with it?

The same as I did when it was released. Some days surprised with pleasure, some days the opposite.

Do you have anything special planned for Sunday's show?

We have talked about playing a birthday song for Rachel (Hurley, club promoter) but we aren't sure yet if it is a good idea. I think the ceiling is too low for one of Nick's back-flips, so I'm curious as to what he'll do.

What are you guys working on for the future?

Just to remain happy as a band and to keep writing songs together. We are lucky to have a great friendships and great songwriting in Star & Micey and as long as we keep that together good things will keep coming our way. That's our goal: friendship and songs.
