Hi-top Fades Are Back

Posted By on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 10:21 AM

Yesterday was Presidents Day, but that doesn't mean good hair got to take the day off. On the contrary, some of the hippest hair was out on the streets, waiting for attention. Of course, once attention was paid, everyone got a little camera shy. But so it goes when you're a teenager with an amazing hi-top fade. Behold:

That's right, the hi-top fade you remember:
is officially back in action:
IMG_5683.JPGAs I was driving down Peabody yesterday, I saw these kids packed onto a curbside leather sofa, hanging out like a band waiting to be photographed. Of course, once I asked to take their photograph only two flat-top fops were willing to ham it up for the camera.

I'm particularly pumped about the two-toned coif — even more so because when I asked who did the dye job, he said it was his mom's handiwork. Sounds like a pretty hip lady.

We can only hope the dance comes back with the 'do:

Boutique Peek: Hoot + Louise (Part Two)

Posted By on Wed, Feb 15, 2012 at 3:15 PM

Yesterday we gave you a small sample of what Hoot and Louise has going on. Today we'll show a little more of the tasty togs you can pick up next time you're in the neighborhood. Hoot and Louise owner Anna Avant and Le Saispas Vintage owner Kristen Irène Young teamed up to showcase some of their favorite outfits from the racks. Check out the slideshow for a closer look.

One of our favorite items is this pair of Super Jeepers sneakers from Sears circa 1960. Kristin hypothesizes these were a response to the popularity of Keds' classic sneakers. But with a name like Super Jeepers, Sears is clearly the winner here. Would you rather wear shoes called "Keds" or shoes called "Super Jeepers"? That's what we thought.

We also appreciate this label from the vintage rack:
  • climax!
We gave this brand 1,000 points for subtlety, but Kristin assured us that Climax had its ahem, climax, once — perhaps even in a photo shoot with Fleetwood Mac? We will confirm with Stevie and report back.

And last but not least, we'd like to thank little Finch, the resident stylist at Hoot and Louise. He graciously showed us how to wield his killer "Blue Steel" pose before retiring for an afternoon nap.

Annas son Finch shows us some tricks of the modeling trade.

Special thanks to Kristin and Anna, models Rowan and Jared, and the lovely staff and patrons at the Arcade.

Boutique Peek: Hoot + Louise (Part One)

Posted By on Tue, Feb 14, 2012 at 10:30 AM

We love local boutiques. Sure, we may have hightailed it to Southaven on a recent Sunday morning to get an edge on the other Jason-Wu-crazed Target shoppers, but when it comes down to it, our hearts belong to the unique flair of locally owned stores.

Which is why we're drawing your attention to one of our favorite things about South Main: A collection of stylish boutiques has popped up in this historic district over the last few years, and Hoot and Louise, a vendor of both vintage and contemporary items, is a true delight among them.
Owned by Anna Avant, the sweetly furnished store has also recently been home to vintage pop-up shop, Le Saispas, which resides in the back half of the building. Kristin Irène Young, the keen eye behind Le Saispas, spends considerable time scouring the Mid-South's vintage, thrift, and antique stores for roses among thorns.
We spent last Sunday with Anna and Kristin, playing dress up and reveling in the joys of vintage classics with contemporary appeal. Check back in tomorrow for a full report on the treasures we found...

Posted By on Thu, Feb 9, 2012 at 4:08 PM

Flitting around Facebook this afternoon, you may have noticed this call for models for the inaugural Memphis Fashion Weekend on March 30th and 31st. But since I assume not everyone is as pitifully attached to their Facebook account as I am, here are the details:

Experienced runway models are needed for the inaugural Memphis Fashion Weekend on March 30th and 31st. Event organizers are looking for:

Women, 5'7-6', sizes 0-6

Men, 5'10-6'2, sizes 38-42L

Could you fit that description? You could? Perfect! You must be available to strut the runway on both Friday and Saturday, March 30th and 31st, and you will be required to show up for a fitting prior to the day of the event or on the day of the event. For more details, email memphisfashionweek@gmail.com.

We can't wait to see what this fashion weekend has in store for us!
