Southern Christian Leadership Conference Announces Gang Reform Coalition

Posted By on Thu, Jan 11, 2007 at 4:00 AM

The SCLC's "Operation Takeback" has announced the formation of a citywide coalition to battle gang violence. The group is calling for gang members to renounce crime and violence and disband their gang sets.

At the Civil Rights Museum on Monday, there will be a passing of the torch of peace, in which a Vice Lord will pass the torch to a Crip, who will pass it to a Blood, who will pass it to a Gangster Disciple, and so forth.

On Wednesday, the SCLC's endeavors gained support from Gary Shorb, CEO of Methodist Healthcare Systems, who will recommend that Memphis Tomorrow endorse the project as part of its Operation Safe Community.

Other activities this weekend include a grafitti-removal project Saturday, and a Gang Summit Sunday at the Civil Rights Museum, in advance of Monday's activities. For more information, call 428-7252.
