Memphis Barber Takes "Hair-Cutting Flames" to Japan

Posted on Tue, Jan 16, 2007 at 4:00 AM

Warren Lewis, a North Memphis barber known for his patented hair shortening technique, got a chance to demonstrate on Japanese television.

Lewis, featured in a Memphis Flyer cover story, uses taper candles to singe away hair. It’s a practice he learned growing up in the country. When his family would kill a chicken for dinner, Lewis was responsible for burning the bird’s fuzz off before it could be cooked.

Though he’s demonstrated the technique on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, his method got international attention during a filming at the Heimat Hotel in Tokyo last week.
