Vanity Fair, Playboy, and . . . Memphis magazine?

The Society of Publication Designers (SPD) has announced winners in its annual competition, and Memphis magazine makes its first appearance on the list this year, joining well-known national publications Esquire, GQ, Rolling Stone, and Time, among others. Not too shabby for a city magazine.

But what the heck is SPD? The New York-based organization is composed of trade, corporate, institutional, newspaper, and consumer editorial art directors. In English, that means SPD is to magazines what the Academy is to the Oscars. At the end of each year, the Society asks top designers to judge the work of their peers. During three days of judging, top art directors, designers and photo editors view and discuss over 6,000 entries in over 100 separate categories.

Awards are presented in June at a black-tie gala in Manhattan, and winning designs are featured in a hardback book, PUB 42, to be used as a reference for designers around the world.

Congratulations to Memphis Magazine art director Hudd Byard, who is having a really, really good week.
