Let the Kids Play!

With the Redbirds out of town this weekend, the best place to get your baseball fix will be in Cordova, at Gameday Baseball’s First Tennessee Field. The 10-field complex will host the National Youth Baseball Championships (NYBC), crowning champions for 10-and-under and 12-and-under divisions.

A total of 16 teams will be competing, representing the top teams from all eight Major Youth Baseball Alliance (MYBA) organizations: American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC), Amateur Athletic Union of the United States (AAU), Babe Ruth Baseball, Dixie Youth Baseball, National Amateur Baseball Federation (NABF), PONY Baseball, Super Series Baseball of America, and United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA).

The MLB Network will televise much of the action, including the 12-and-under championship contest on Sunday night. (The game will be played at 5 p.m. and televised on tape-delay at 7 p.m.) The 10-and-under championship game will be played Saturday at 3 p.m. Preliminary games (in the 10-and-under division) will begin Thursday at noon, with a full slate of games all day Friday and Saturday. The 12-and-under semifinals will be played at 9:30 a.m. and noon on Sunday.

The 16 teams will be representing seven states: Arkansas (Texarkana and Hamburg), California, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi (Brandon), and Texas.

“In addition to the television coverage, the buzz created among the youth sports community is incredible,” says Leigh Fox, president of Gameday Baseball. “Memphis is becoming a preferred destination for both tournament organizers and the youth who want to play on the home field of the New Era NYBC.”

Tickets can be purchased at the First Tennessee Fields: $5 per day or $12 for the entire tournament. On Sunday, everyone wearing a New Era cap will be admitted free.
