Acting Smart: U of M Professor Sarah Brown Receives Fullbright Award, Travels to Israel

Sarah Brown, who joined the theater faculty at the University of Memphis in 2007, has received a Fulbright Award from the United States/Israel Educational Foundation (USIEF). Brown will teach students students at the University of Haifa, Israel how to how to develop solo performances based on personal experiences. She will also lead classes and workshops on Commedia-style clowning.


"The subject matter for my solo shows has often been Jews in America," Brown says. "I've written about being Jewish from a variety of perspectives within a variety of different 'lives', always with the intent of engendering more understanding of who Jews are to themselves as well as to others, and attempting to expose the demons of social and religious alienation that have molded their experience throughout history."

Hamlet flees Denmark to fulfill his destiny. In Kill Shakespeare , a new independent comic book title, these well known characters join with the fairy Robin Goodfellow and the irascible Falstaff in an epic struggle against Richard III, Lady Macbeth, and the scheming Iago. It's like The Justice League vs The Injustice League, only with lots of thees and thous thrown in.

High School Musical Awards: The Nominees

Memphis and Shelby County has some really ambitious High School theater, and the Orpheum's High School Musical Awards are meant to reward some hard working artists that go largely unnoticed.
The new program recognizes achievement in all areas of high school musical theater, is scheduled for May 27, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at the Orpheum. Tickets are $15-$35 and are on sale now.
