American Athletic Conference Unveils Logo

Wondering what kind of signage you'll be seeing at the Liberty Bowl and FedExForum in the coming years? (At least when the University of Memphis is playing those venues.) Well, here it is. Would fit nicely on Captain America's chest if you ask me.

Tiger Nation lost a great one with the passing of Harry Schuh earlier this month. The offensive lineman is one of just six Memphis football players to be named All-America (1st, 2nd, or 3rd team) by the Associated Press. Schuh was the first such honoree, in 1964.

Name the other five All-America Tigers.

• 1969 — David Berrong, DB (3rd)
• 1971 — Mike Stark, OL (1st)
• 1992 — Joe Allison, K (1st)
• 1995 — Jerome Woods, DB (3rd)
• 2004 — DeAngelo Williams, RB (3rd)
• 2005 — DeAngelo Williams, RB (2nd)

Seven former Tigers have played in the NBA's conference finals (or league semifinals, if you prefer). And by "played" I mean saw game action. Name the seven players, and the team each represented.

• Win Wilfong (1958 NBA-champion St. Louis Hawks)
• Wayne Yates (1962 Lakers)
• Larry Kenon (1979 Spurs)
• William Bedford (1991 Pistons)
• Penny Hardaway (1995 and 1996 Magic)
Vincent Askew (1996 Sonics)
• Derrick Rose (2011 Bulls)

The Tiger football team has retired the jerseys of six former players (the most recent last season). Three of those players were teammates for one season. This week's question is a three-parter:

• Who were the three teammates?
• What season did they play together?
• What was the Tigers' record that season?

Running back Dave Casinelli (#30), offensive lineman Harry Schuh (#79), and linebacker John Bramlett (#64) played together for the 1962 Tigers under coach Spook Murphy. Those Tigers went 8-1, outscoring their opponents 261-67. The Tigers' only loss that season came in September to an Ole Miss team ranked third in the country.

Rising senior Chris Crawford will enter the 2013-14 season with 926 career points. Barring injury, he should join classmate Joe Jackson (a fellow native Memphian) in the Tigers' 1,000-point club. When was the last time two native Memphians played four seasons together and each scored 1,000 points?

Andre Turner and Baskerville Holmes were teammates from the 1982-83 season through 1985-86. Turner finished his career with 1,442 points (12th in Tiger history) while Holmes scored 1,112 (38th).

The 2012 Tiger football team finished its season with three straight wins. It was only the third such finish for the U of M since 1976. What were the other two seasons during this stretch in which Memphis won (at least) its final three games? And how did the Tigers do the following year?

football_helmet.jpg

After a 3-5 start, the 1988 Tigers won their last three games (over Southwestern Louisiana, Tulsa, and Vanderbilt). Alas, the streak wasn't enough to save coach Charlie Bailey his job. Chuck Stobart replaced Bailey . . . and opened the 1989 season with four straight losses. That '89 team also lost its final five games to finish 2-9.

The 2005 Tigers sent All-America senior DeAngelo Williams off in style, winning their last three games (including the Motor City Bowl over Akron) to finish 7-5. The U of M needed wins over Southern Miss and Marshall at the end of the regular season just to gain bowl eligibility. Minus Williams, the 2006 Tigers opened with a loss to Ole Miss and suffered a dreadful 2-10 season.
