Breakouts don’t always announce themselves with volume. Sometimes they arrive quietly, stitched together through early mornings, late nights, and minutes that only matter if you’re paying close attention. Cam Spencer’s second NBA season has followed that path, unfolding not as a surprise, but as a reveal.

What’s happening now did not come out of nowhere. It has been building.

A Stretch That Demanded Attention

Over the last 12 games, Spencer has shifted the tone of his season. He has averaged nearly 18 points per game during that stretch, shooting efficiently from deep and consistently punishing defenses that lose track of him for even a moment. The spacing changes when he checks in. The margin for error shrinks.

Those numbers sit atop a season line that already speaks to efficiency and impact: 12.0 points per game, 4.0 assists, over 50 percent shooting from three, a plus-five on-court differential, and elite true shooting (71.6%). But the recent surge feels less like a spike and more like clarity. This is what it looks like when preparation finally meets trust.

The Opportunity Arrived Early

With the Grizzlies navigating a rotating list of backcourt injuries early in the season, Spencer found himself needed sooner and more often than expected. When December arrived, so did his opportunity, and he did not waste it. He embraced the minutes, settled into the moment, and turned necessity into momentum.

The responsibility was not cosmetic. These were real minutes, real possessions, and real pressure. Spencer responded by simplifying the game. He spaced the floor, made quick reads, and allowed the offense to breathe when it needed order.

The Work Was Never Quiet Inside the Building

Inside the Grizzlies’ locker room, none of this has caught anyone off guard. Jaren Jackson Jr. has watched the process long before the production forced the conversation.

“It’s special,” Jackson Jr. said of Spencer’s recent success. “We see it all the time in practice. He’s always there early, shooting by himself. Sometimes he’s there late. Sometimes he’s there when we don’t want him to be there. People are always trying to kick him out.”

Jackson Jr. has been quick to connect the dots between routine and results.

“That’s what you get when you put in that type of work,” he emphasized. “He’s doing everything right now. I’m proud of him.”

More Than a Hot Hand

Spencer’s value extends beyond makes and misses. His shooting gravity stretches defenses well past the arc, bending coverage before the offense even gets organized. That pressure opens driving lanes, accelerates ball movement, and creates early advantages.

Head coach Tuomas Iisalo has been vocal about how much that matters.

“Cam Spencer has established himself as one of the more dangerous shooters in the league and has ignited from our bench,” Iisalo noted.

That shooting threat has also fueled Spencer’s growth as a decision-maker.

“I think I’ve always been a pretty good playmaker, stemming from being able to shoot,” Spencer explained. “When someone has to guard you from 27 or 28 feet, it opens up the floor. It gives you space to get into the paint or start the offense in a good position. I’m just trying to make the right play.”

Recognition Catching Up to Reality

As defenses have adjusted, Spencer has responded with counters. He has become more comfortable attacking closeouts, operating in ball screens, and rising into step-to-the-side threes that punish aggressive coverage.

“He’s learned to leverage his shooting much better,” Iisalo assessed. “Whether it’s in ball screens or in closeouts where he can drive, he’s added layers that make the defense very difficult.”

Even so, Iisalo believes the broader conversation has lagged behind the reality on the floor.

“I’m surprised that people aren’t talking about him more,” he remarked. “Here’s a guy who played sparingly last year, and now he’s causing trouble.”

That assessment carries weight when paired with what came before the season.

“He wanted to come in at the end of May and start learning new things,” Iisalo recalled. “Now he’s reaping the benefits. Preparation has met opportunity.”

Finding His Place in the Chaos

Memphis’ season demanded answers early. Injuries, inconsistency, and a 4-11 start forced players throughout the rotation to shoulder more responsibility. Spencer embraced it.

“We hit some adversity early,” he reflected. “But we’ve bounced back pretty well.”

He steadied second units, handled both guard spots, and delivered offense without demanding the ball. His presence brought order to stretches that once felt rushed.

Not a Moment, a Marker

Nothing about Spencer’s rise feels inflated. His game is rooted in discipline and awareness, in understanding how small decisions shape possessions. He spaces the floor. He reads pressure. He makes the next right play.

This is not a heater chasing attention. It is a marker of growth.

And as the season moves forward, Cam Spencer’s breakout no longer feels like something that might happen. It is already here, hiding in plain sight for anyone willing to look beyond the arc.
