A new document now up for public inspection shows major transportation projects planned for the MidSouth for the next 10 years.
Some of the projects include replacing the I-55 Bridge, new interchanges at Airways & 240, improvements for bikers and pedestrians, and more. In total, all of the planned projects in the document cost $3,441,651,083.
Projects are planned for counties in both Tennessee and Mississippi. Tennessee’s projects cost $2,607,542,451, while Mississippi’s total $834,108,632.
The Memphis Metropolitan Planning Organization (Memphis MPO) released their 2026-2029 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) on July 28 . The document gives details on project upgrades for the Shelby, Fayette, DeSoto, and Marshall counties.
The document is available for public review and comment from July 28- August 26. Memphis MPO will also hold three public meetings on Tuesday, August 5, Wednesday, August 6, and Thursday, August 7 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
These plans were made in collaboration with a number of agencies such as the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA), and Memphis and Shelby County Port Commission (MSCPC).
โProjects included in the TIP are reflective of the regionโs priorities in all areas of transportation, including roadway and highways, freight, transit, pedestrian, bicycle, infrastructure maintenance and rehabilitation,congestion mitigation, air quality, and transportation operations,โ Memphis MPO said.
Priority is given to projects that increase safety and access to economic development, public health, tourism and more. These projects have already procured funding โ both federal and non federal.

I-55 Bridge Replacement
Cost: $954 million

I-240 Interchange at Airways Blvd.
Cost: $180 million

Lamar Avenue widening
Cost: $160 million

MATA Operations Facility relocation
Cost: $138 million

Holmes Road East widening
Cost: $42 million

Summer Avenue Lane reduction
Cost: $27 million

I-40 Modifications
Cost: $18 million

Shelby Drive lane widening
Cost: $13 million
