Dammit, Gannet

I know what you’re all thinking.

“House committee temporarily halts bill banning sanctuary cities, mandating ICE collabor,” looks like another big “above-the-fold” headline mistake for The Commercial Appeal.

Those among us versed in the classics and/or Google Translate will recognize “collabor” as a Latin word meaning to collapse or fail. Could this be the copy editor’s way of saying, “This headline will never fit, so eff-it”? Probably not.

Also, from the CA’s TV and radio sports listings from Thursday, April 27:

Television listings for today:

BASEBALL: MLB, N.Y. Mets at St. Louis, FSSE, 6 p.m.

Radio listings for today:

BASEBALL: MLB, St. Louis at Pittsburgh, WMC 790, 6 p.m.

As one baseball aficionado noted upon seeing the listing, “I’m a Cardinals fan, but I don’t think St. Louis can pull this one off.”

Lastly, Fly on the Wall would like to thank artist Jim Palmer for sending us his “Damnet; Dayvis” cartoon inspired by the “Dammit, Gannet” feature. For a better look, visit the Fly on the Wall blog at memphisflyer.com

Miles Files

Fly on the Wall thought local fans would want to know that former Memphis tele-journalist Jason Miles tweeted his masterpiece last week: “Police in Houston and Louisiana sharing info on severed heads found here and there.” Willy nilly.
