Edmund Ford Jr. formally resigned his seat on the Shelby County Commission, the board announced Wednesday, after he pled guilty in federal court on charges of tax evasion.

The resignation is part of Ford’s plea related to a scheme in which he used his commission seat to push for grants for nonprofits. He would then contract with those nonprofits through his tech company.

The board said it received Ford’s resignation Monday.

“In accordance with Shelby County procedures and state law, the board will take the necessary steps to appoint a new representative to serve the residents of District 9, ensuring continued representation and uninterrupted constituent services,” reads a statement from the commission.”
