Now open at the David Lusk Gallery, Tim Crowderโ€™s โ€œBuilding a Proper Wallโ€ is a surrealโ€”at times bleak, at times playfully ironicโ€” look at a psychological landscape.

Crowder does not use human figures in these paintings, though there are traces of their existence: in the walls and fences and houses theyโ€™ve crafted. Instead of a human face for his personal experiences and feelings of alienation, Crowder opts for animals and animal shapes.

โ€œAnimals, I like them because they arenโ€™t so specific,โ€ says Crowder. โ€œYou paint a person and it means something different. Youโ€™ve painted a portrait or youโ€™ve painted a type of person โ€” either young or old, or something you may not intend to. But with animals theyโ€™re a little bit more open to interpretation.โ€
