If you’ve ever wanted to experience the full spectrum of Memphis arts in a single afternoon, this year’s Art for All Festival delivers exactly that — and then some.
The Dixon Gallery & Gardens is hosting this year, this free, family-friendly celebration in partnership with Shelby County Government. Now in its fourth year, Art for All has quickly grown into one of the city’s most vibrant showcases of creativity, bringing together more than 40 arts and cultural organizations and 17 performances across two stages.
“It’s an event where you can feel the heartbeat of our city all in one place,” says Christan Allen, assistant director of education at the Dixon. That heartbeat will echo through the gardens and galleries with performances by groups like Opera Memphis, Hattiloo Theatre, Playhouse on the Square, and Memphis Youth Symphony, alongside dance, theater, and music from across the city’s creative ecosystem.
But Art for All isn’t just about watching — it’s about doing. Visitors can dive into hands-on art-making, explore booths from organizations like River Arts Fest and Stax Museum of American Soul Music, and enjoy classic festival fun like face painting, balloon art, and even a photobooth. Food trucks and DJs round out the atmosphere, making it as lively as it is welcoming.
For Janet Lo, Shelby County’s director of community engagement and nonprofit services, the mission goes deeper than a single day. “Art for All is about increasing awareness and access to cultural opportunities,” she says. “It’s not a zero-sum game — we’re lifting the entire arts landscape so people can discover everything Memphis has to offer.”
That spirit of discovery is part of what makes the festival unique. From major institutions to emerging groups, everyone shares the same stage — sometimes literally. One moment you might catch a symphony performance; the next, a spontaneous line dance breaking out in the crowd.
Held rain or shine (indoors if needed), the festival also marks a special moment for the Dixon as it celebrates its 50th anniversary year. And fittingly, this year’s garden setting adds a fresh dimension to an already dynamic event.
Come early, stay curious, and don’t be surprised if you leave saying exactly what organizers hope: “I didn’t know this existed.”
