3rd Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

When: Fri., April 13, 5:30 p.m. 2012
You will no doubt see art, and plenty of it, during the Broad Avenue Spring Art Walk. Indeed, the work of some 60 artists will be displayed in the neighborhood's galleries and studios.

Chances are, as well, that you will see a guy or two or 80 in pairs of high heels (mostly red) walking down Broad. Those guys are the Memphis Men for Memphis Women participating in the 3rd Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event organized by the Memphis Area Women's Council.

"It's a hoot," says Deborah Clubb of the council, who notes that this silly spectacle has a very serious goal of getting more men engaged in combating the plague of domestic violence that affects women.

The Women's Council has a number of issues it addresses, from corporal punishment in schools to sexual harassment. But, Clubb says, the council is dedicating most of its time to the issue of domestic abuse. Last year's walk raised about $2,000. Clubb says funds go to programs such as the one that provides training for employers to recognize the signs of abuse.

Now let's get back to that walk. Points of interest: The walk is a loop from Broad over to Sam Cooper and back again. Last year, the council bought several pairs of red high heels for participants, though they can bring their own. The walk is not a race, but it can be a relay, with one man handing over the heels to another at any point in the walk. The shoes do not have to be red, and wedges are okay. Flats at this event, however, are a fashion no-no. "That's so undramatic," Clubb says.
