Re: “"A Man for All Seasons" — Lewis Donelson's Century

CL, you can pretty much scratch Noblesse Oblige off your search parameters

Re: “"A Man for All Seasons" — Lewis Donelson's Century

Mr. Baker,
I know if I had been paying closer attention, I probably wouldn't have to ask this question but on today's scene, who might approach Mr. Donelson's class? In today's climate is it even possible for someone like him rise up?

Re: “Mackler Out of Senate Race, Yields to Bredesen

cracko,

Maybe I wasn't clear in my use of the word "screwed." That is what will happen now, and there's no play to make at this point point unless a more progressive candidate comes out of nowhere before the filing deadline and then defies all odds with unheard of fundraising ability. But that's not going to happen now that the Dem Establishment has already pushed Mackler out of running, they'll likewise use all the influence they can to keep any would be challengers from running.

Tennessee Republicans aren't looking for a Republican running as a Democrat, they'll vote for whatever looney the Republicans wind up nominating. And like I said, I don't think I see the Tenncare slashing Bredesen generating much enthusiasm among Democrats.

I just wish the Democrats weren't so incompetent as to allow bigoted crazies like Marsha Blackburn or Mae Beavers to waltz their way into the U.S. Senate. I keep wondering what it's going to take for the Dems to stop trying to win by appealing to the right instead of running candidates that excite voters enough to show up. How many more losses will it take?

The answer's always "a few more."

trout87, so what's your suggestion?

Re: “Mackler Out of Senate Race, Yields to Bredesen

So we're screwed now. Marsha Blackburn or whatever uber-conservative sentient pile of garbage the GOP decide to nominate will win handily.

What's it going to take for Dems to figure out we aren't in the 90s anymore? Why do they keep trying to win over moderate conservatives and mythical undecided voters when that strategy keeps failing over and over again?

Re: “Left Activists Intrude on Meeting of Shelby County Democrats

We had to kick her out of Occupy back in 2011, where real alliance-building happened on the ground. Be gentle with her, good people.

She does not speak for the socialists, greens, or any group besides those two aching human souls. The two of them are merely screaming for "Peace! Land! Bread!"

As a state senator he would have been making the I40 run more often.

Funk,
Or you and like minded could swam and procedurally take over the local party. Me and my mom and others did it years ago but didn't settle in for the long run leaving whippersnappers like you high and dry. Sorry. But if sympathy doesn't do it for you then you and like minded could swam and procedurally take over the local party.

Re: “Left Activists Intrude on Meeting of Shelby County Democrats

We're either gonna get a Jill Stein type or another Trump/Bush type.

Anybody who thanks a traditional R or D can win anything going forward into the post-internet age is living with their head in the sand.

Whatever the future is, it will be absolutely nothing like the past.

Re: “Left Activists Intrude on Meeting of Shelby County Democrats

I started to look at this, saw that it was an hour of my life I could never get back, and stopped. I have some problems with the DNC too, but I am not going to interrupt the SCDP about it. Idiocy, nothing short of it. Let them go worship Jill Stein somewhere else, we have work to do.

Re: “Attorney Wade Joins Commission Team in Battle with County Mayor

Tennessee Atty. Gen. Herbert Slatery III recently wrote an op-ed page piece that argues against running out and filing lawsuits against drug companies in the opioid situation. He says they will draw a lot of attention but will be tied up in court for years. Slatery argues for a careful, well-planned investigation using the significant powers that the state has. I have no idea which side is correct on this issue, but the stories about the dispute between the mayor and and county commissioners outline only one side of the issue. I do believe the charter powers of who has the authority to hire lawyers and recommend lawsuits are really important issues that need to be firmly decided. Here is a link to Slatery's piece in The Tennessean:

Re: “Attorney Wade Joins Commission Team in Battle with County Mayor

How could any action against licensed dope pushers be too extensive?

They need to be rounded up, as all criminals are, charged with the poisonings they have committed, and sentenced in due process of the law.

Why anyone would want to obstruct justice being served is beyond me.

I don't care if you catch the Pope himself selling poison and calling it medicine, and I don't care if he has a stack of licenses as thick as a dictionary to do it.

It's fundamentally unjust that something an unlicensed amateur drug dealer would face a manslaughter charge for a rich doctor can get away with scot-free.

If anything, the licensed Doctors should be held to a HIGHER standard than a street dealer, because the Doctor is trained to know better.

Re: “Steve Mulroy Is Giving Away a Kidney (Really)

After watching his comments on tv news hoping Trump is in trouble. I decided Mr mulroy must be a liberal so I looked him up and them saw his bio and adventure spirit and kidney donation and got a different picture. My late husband also from TN was a skydiver and a trekker, climbed on the grand Teton WY on honeymoon. He was also a private pilot, a chemist and much more. I remain an IKE republican, however.

This man is impressive and I wish him well.

Everyone knows that Trump has his problems; but, instead of grandstanding, I wish my Congressman would spend his time helping to solve the problems our community faces. Drugs, crime, education, poverty, etc.

Re: “Chancellor Kyle Splits the Baby in the Opioid-Suit Dispute

Gosh, we've mentioned all these politicians, yet we haven't mentioned the name of a single doctor with blood on his hands.

Name them.

Name the doctors who caused this crisis, charge them with the murders they have committed, and send them to general population in prison.

No more delays.
