Re: “Defining and Defending the First Amendment

I'm with Charles on this. Anything we can do to stick it to the Catholics is ok by me.

Andy Holt's greatest contribution to the Lost Cause is to make Forrest appear more worthy when compared to, say, Andy Holt.

Re: “Pick a Side

It just goes to prove, yet again, how people like the Nazis could ascend to dominate Germany back in the day and why they have become as organized as they are now: there are always a significant number of individuals who believe there can be nuances and room for compromise with such groups and philosophies. Papen, Hindenburg and Chamberlain might have opinions on such an approach. There is also a significant minority who believe that visiting the violent acts perpetrated by such organizations with counter violence is equally disgusting. I guess prior generations of American military members are guilty of similar counter violence seeing as they also fought and killed those who adhered to Nazi/white supremacist beliefs- within the borders of Germany no less!

Check you empathy here. Sure Donald bad mouthed Duke earlier but after a few too many, rolls over in bed the next morning and..... oh no not again!
Cory901,
True enough, but Nazis? No real shading here.

Re: “Pick a Side

Pick a "side"? No, Bruce, not every issue is black and white and without nuances and room for compromises, even though raving polarizing angry coo-coos of your ilk on both sides of the aisle want it to be and have largely succeeded in making it so.

Re: “Pick a Side

Nice reverse of guilt by association. Because Duke likes the policies of Trump does not equate with Trump adhering to the views of Duke. Trump has spoken against Duke decades ago and recently. This magazine, being allegedly 'neutral', seeks to integrate Secular Humanism as god of society.

Re: “Defining and Defending the First Amendment

The entire Constitution was written by representatives of the States as a 'chain' upon the Federal Government. It isn't negative sanctions against States at all. A State can even have a so-called State religion. Read all the early Preambles to the State Constitutions? All of them mentioned Jesus Christ, the Bible, God the Father, etc. How many Muslim Churches do you think we had in the early colonies? The First Amendment was based upon a separation of institutional jurisdiction. The First Amendment was a warning against Congress to keep away from dictating a national religious and institutional requirement for the nation. Given the general Christian consensus at the drafting of the Constitution (see the Federalist Papers for examples), the First Amendment was to keep Congress from choosing sides with a particular denomination within Christendom. New York can choose to actually dictate a State religion if it were to so choose by a majority of their representatives; so long as their State Constitution allowed it. the word 'Congress' is in the First Amendment, not the word 'State'. The legal issue is therefore irrelevant to whether a Muslim or any other religion may build in New York. It depends upon the New York State Constitution, not the U.S. Constitution in those regards. Since religious 'type' is not a particular duty listed under the category particulars of the General Welfare Clause, the Federal Government has no jurisdiction in a case of this nature. Your appeal to the First Amendment is therefore misguided.

Re: “Many Sides: The Mantra of Evil

My mother had the misfortune of being born in Poland in 1938. Hidden by Ukranian nuns as a favor to her father, she survived the Holocaust by changing her name and pretending to be Catholic. Miraculously, her mother and her uncle survived as well. She has never met, never seen, the father who arranged to have her saved. He and everyone else were wiped out. To this day, my mother cannot look at any symbols of naziism. As the child of a Holocaust survivor, I am the reverse; I cannot look away. I confront it at every turn. I have lost people who I thought were friends because of anti-Semitism. Professionally, I joined a line of work that allows me to confront racism, sexism, ethnocentrism, and all the products of fear and hate on a regular basis, in ways that occur both subtle and blatant. I have tried very hard to live by the words "never again."

I have tried never to give in to violence. I am ashamed that, in my youth, I briefly flirted with the Jewish Defense League, a group back then that was only too willing to engage in offense against those they believed were a threat, like the Skinhead. I learned firsthand about the costs of violence. I buried that down, and hoped - believed - that the need for literally combating hate on the streets instead of in our workplaces and courtrooms (where it should be) would never come again to my doorstep, advocated by public institutions or officials bestowed with the public trust. I convinced myself that, no matter our political persuasions, hate and fear-mongering would remain on the shadowy fringes of society.

But I, and all of us, are going to be tested as this resurgence of old fears and hates - packaged anew - continues to grow. Like you, I will not be silent, and I will not stand aside. Like you, I too live on a street with neighbors I care about that could be in any town, anywhere in the US. And, if the time does come, like you, I too own a tire iron.

Re: “Meet the Tennessee Lawmakers Who Think Running Over Protesters Should Be Protected

@ glen

It's not "due care" it's "do care" as in, you only have to not run people down like animals in the street if you "do care" but you have the option to "don't care."

Because it's important that people who are considering constitutionally protected civil protest fear for their lives, you know, to shut them up and keep them suppressed.

Gotta Make America Great Again, and by "again" they mean how it was before Civil Rights.

Re: “Meet the Tennessee Lawmakers Who Think Running Over Protesters Should Be Protected

So, why give additional civil immunity to someone already exercising due care? Is he talking about a different kind of "due care"?

Please note that the language linked to above does NOT reflect the amendments the sponsors added. The public isn't allowed to see them until the bill clears the full committee.

Both men's legislative records are linked to the bill-tracker site with abstracts. But if you're not inclined to click, here's the abstract for SB0944: "
Tort Liability and Reform - As introduced, provides civil immunity for the driver of an automobile who injures a protester who is blocking traffic in a public right-of-way if the driver was exercising due care. - Amends TCA Title 19; Title 20; Title 29, Chapter 34; Title 54 and Title 55."

I would like to see the actual wording of the bill to check the facts. Is your headline factually correct??? Is your opinion correct??? Wish you would have given us the actual wording of the bill.
