Re: “Shop Memphis! Great Local Gifts for Everyone on Your List

Those yucky corporate profits pay your salary since without the corporate advertisements this paper so eagerly pursues and covets you wouldn't have a paycheck. To deny this ineluctable truth is both blinkered and willfully deceptive. Having said that, I shouldn't be surprised that such pablum is offered up as legitimate commentary in this day and age.
God (and yes I said God) help us!

Congrats to the players. Hope you finish the season on a high note. AAC championship win and New Year's bowl game and win would be great. GTG!

Re: “Justice League

Uhm. Yeah. Chris isn't going to do that. Continuing his mocking bullet style from the article:

- Reading is hard. Even when there's lots of pictures. This is why he reviews movies.
- He's clearly not a "fan" and never will be. "Source material" isn't relevant to film critics generally, and this one specifically.
- Instead of giving a thoughtful and reasoned critique like a responsible journalist - even a film critic - would do, he just takes "pot shots" using this bullet style, and then blames the film for inviting such a horrid and virtually meaningless writing style, unwilling to take responsibility for his own poor analysis (Cavill is "the worst"...reasons please?, etc.). Hey! Just like I'm doing back at him! Difference is, of course, I'm not a film critic, and am not a paid employee of the otherwise thoughtful and deliberative Memphis Flyer.

Re: “'Church for Black Men' Coming Next Year

One of my favorite hymns growing up held the following verse:

Let us build a house where hands will reach
beyond the wood and stone
to heal and strengthen, serve and teach,
and live the Word theyve known.
Here the outcast and the stranger
bear the image of Gods face;
let us bring an end to fear and danger.
All are welcome, all are welcome,
all are welcome in this place.

I am not saying that there cannot be some good from reaching out to individuals within a faith community to connect with them on a specific level, in fact, most churches have ministries that seek to do just that. But to build an entire denomination devoted solely to a type of person based on their color or gender seems more divisive. It seems to me contradictory to the very heart and purpose of a faith community, to extend the arms of Jesus wide open proclaiming, "all are welcome".

Re: “Lend Me Some Shoe Polish: Is casual blackface appropriate in 2012?

This really IS fascinating. A local company will be doing this show and, yeah, I've never seen nor read it, I'll admit, but the blackface part does worry me. One wonders, will they cast two men of color? It would make for a somewhat scathing play on the whole "Oh, we all look the same to you?" thing, being both smart and sharp, but is it too much acidic humor for this type of play? And, ohmigosh, Pagliacci is such a brilliant idea! Well suggested. The only thing is: can one substitute in Pagliacci without running into trouble with the publisher?

Re: “Bigger Than a Bowl

Ha! I still think the Liberty Bowl is better than any non New Year's Six bowl. I just wish they could get better matchups than a 6-6 sec team vs a 7-5 big 12 team. And oh, I hope TCU beats Oklahoma. The Big 12 needs to be shut out of the playoffs for not considering Memphis as a member.

Re: “Bigger Than a Bowl

I confess to homerism with the Liberty Bowl comment, Strait Shooter. But it's a special event for this region, and has been for more than half a century. It's a shame the gluttony of bowl games simply drowns it among the dozens that have a fraction of the Liberty Bowl's history. Thanks for reading (and your attention to detail).

Re: “Bigger Than a Bowl

Frank, a minor quibble: You include the Liberty Bowl in your list of the bowl games that still matter. Why?...C'mon. Let's be real. Outside of Memphis, the Liberty Bowl doesn't matter any more than any of the other non-New Year's Six bowl games.

Re: “Justice League

Justice league was made more for the comic book fans. If you didn't understand it then you went into it without reading a single comic. One of your points was about the mother boxes being a ripoff when it's actually the infinity stones that came after them. Also they do 2 completely different things. The movie was hugely based off being like the justice league animated series so that's why it was a little choppy but it wasn't as bad as you say it is. The movie is a solid 85 to me out of 100. CGI could have been better but the cast was great, before the next comic movie however, please read the source material before going to see it.
