Re: “City Council Calls for a Backup Plan to Remove Forrest Statue

Sheeple,

Now do yourselves a favor and read how the Park and Statue were dedicated, and you will find that it was a gift, and can not be removed. No matter what your narrow minds conjure up. Now this started back in the early 2000's the removal of all statues and Memorials in Memphis. OK, OK, why don't we tear up the streets on where every Slave was forced to walk. We don't have the multi-million dollar street cars anymore or the Great Pyramid, or even the obelisk that proclaimed Tom Lee a "GREAT NEGRO". And that was a dubious "HONOR" in that timeframe. In 2003 it mysteriously feel down due to high winds and was removed. REALLY!!! BS Lets just isolate ourselves like, North Korea and take a sharp stick an poke a Grizzle Bear. Let BS artist tear down what Memphis stands for and what brings in visitors money, a Bass pro shop can't do it all. Everyone has a Wendy's seen and eat at one you've done it all. BURRRP!!! Memphis in May is only a small event and the rest of the World has better things going on. Now we let the "Memphis Bell" go back to be restored and displayed at Wright Patterson AFB Dayton, Ohio. because your pockets are not deep enough to complete the restoration yourself but yet your quick to destroy history if it crumples your panties. Memphian's unite!!! Dawn your turbans' and tear the walls of the ramparts down, destroy our Heritage and burn the books in the streets as though ISIS is your savior. You cried and shook your fist at them you should be doing the same in a mirror. Take a selfie ISIS. Just remember you cant spell MEMPHIS is without ISIS.

Re: “New Mural Installed on Highland Strip

I'm talking about Mayor Henry Loeb.

You know, the mayor under who's watch MLK was assassinated?

Here's a fun article from http://MLK50.com about all the Loebs, even their good ol' little boys.

https://mlk50.com/the-loebs-exploited-blac…

It's still politically correct to like MLK, right?

Re: “Mud Island Could be Home of New Freshwater Aquarium

I was once a long time resident of Long Beach, CA. I can attest to there being no proof that tourism gimmicks fix any problems a City has.

Memphis already has an aquarium, tax payer supported. It's right next to the elevator at Bass Pro.

Memphis needs to stop putting tax dollars to work for companies and gimmics, and start putting tax dollars into education and crime prevention. Then maybe people will want to come here, maybe even stay here.

Re: “City Council Calls for a Backup Plan to Remove Forrest Statue

As a backup plan, I would suggest, in light of events 50 years ago, that the city back several garbage trucks up to the statue, tie it off and pull it down.

Re: “Lipstick Smear: Let Theatre Memphis' "Stage Kiss" slip you some tongue

I think TM decided to mount it on the Lohrey stage, fully aware that it's really Next Stage material, because of the perceived set requirements. If my understanding's correct, it's a remarkable sacrifice/gift on TM's part.

Very good take on this play. I did wonder why this wasn't done in the little theatre.

Re: “Mud Island Could be Home of New Freshwater Aquarium

I have to agree with Tommy Foster. Personally I find aquariums and zoos quite depressing. But I would pay good money to watch the Animal Liberation Front try to liberate a couple of alligator gar from a thousand gallon tank.

Re: “Memphis Fire Department: Critical Changes Needed to Improve Services

Geez Herbert, when did you get off the farm? The "improvement plans" have been around for decades, they are called "stairs". You think that there is a truck with a ladder that can reach the top of the Empire State Building or something?

As for the 911 calls, the data is available here: http://www.memphistn.gov/Communications
As you will see, the local 911 response time has been less than the national average (20 seconds) since November of last year. The current average for Memphis is 8.75 seconds. 93.6 % of calls are answered in 20 seconds or less. More than 50% of calls have been answered in 20 seconds or less since at least August of 2016- the earliest time period on the chart.
Hope that helps.

Re: “Mud Island Could be Home of New Freshwater Aquarium

Crack-
As hokey as Herberts idea may be, he may also have a point regarding the creation of an aquarium when an abundance of such facilities already exists. In April, the Times Free Press noted that the number of visitors to the Tennessee State Aquarium in Chattanooga has never surpassed its first-year totals and that the Atlanta Aquarium continues to have a notable impact on attendance in Chatt. The TN Aquarium is still on solid footing, but has embarked on a series of expensive expansions to help compensate for the competition. I happened to spend a day in the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans recently. That facility is very tired with a manager noting that they too have seen attendance decrease as other cities added large aquariums to their list of attractions. Had we built such a facility 10-15 years ago when the idea was first suggested, it may have served a larger role in developing our citys competitive edge for tourist dollars. Now, its more like: So youve got an aquariumyou and everybody else. When so many other places have X back home, they are less likely to spend time and money going to X while in another city. Unless we were in some place like San Diego, we would not waste the time going to a zoo in another city when we have a great one here.
Not to say we should not also build an aquarium for purely the local/regional draw, I know my family would join assuming Archimanias design/involvement does not have the its usual impact of making the proposal unfeasible.

Kook, those yankee bastards done took the Pippin up to Wisconsin, maybe we should take one of their giant cheese wheels. God knows we shouldn't imitate those successful cities. Hey how about a reenactment of the Battle of Memphis, 3 times an hour and still give us 15 minutes to sell a bunch of Chinese made Confederate memorabilia.

Re: “Memphis Fire Department: Critical Changes Needed to Improve Services

Interesting. I was chatting with a retired firefighter a few weeks ago, and he mentioned the City has no equipment that can reach people trapped in buildings above the eighth floor or so. I was very interested since I live on the ninth floor of a Midtown building. Does anyone know if this is true, and if the City has any improvement plans in this area?
Has anyone heard if the 911 system has been improved to meet the national response time standard on more than 50% of 911 calls?

Re: “Mud Island Could be Home of New Freshwater Aquarium

One option I long thought of for redeveloping the island was: renaming it Liberty Island, building a real exhibition building for the Memphis Belle B-17, running the WWII documentary and the later Hollywood film on the Belle throughout the day, giving a brief history of Memphis as tied to the river and wars (e.g., as part of the Volunteer state and Millington NAS's role in WWII), throwing in the carousel and Zippin Pippin from Libertyland for the kids, and capping things with concerts featuring local talent. Oh well, never mind... Instead of doing something unique and preserving our past, we can now again imitate cities such as Chattanooga, New Orleans, Seattle, Baltimore, etc.

Re: “Mud Island Could be Home of New Freshwater Aquarium

Aquariums are not cruel if the fish are given proper space. Also most freshwater aquarium can have fish that never have been in the wild
That being said that you are that critical of an aquarium I assume you are probably vegan an against everything.

Re: “Mud Island Could be Home of New Freshwater Aquarium

It never ceases to amaze me how hoppin' Bass Pro is every time I go there, or how often I find myself picking up the odd bit of gear when I'm downtown. Bass Pro only seems ill placed until you realize they have one of the best selections of guns and ammo in the city, and if there's any place where you might feel the need to carry a gun, it's Downtown Memphis.
