Re: “University of Memphis to Begin Constructing Land Bridge & More by Year's End

I would love to see the plan that will comes after this plan.

Re: “University of Memphis to Begin Constructing Land Bridge & More by Year's End

The rendering shown for this article is very outdated. The Flyer should contact The University of Memphis for the current renderings as this is not what the current design looks like anymore. Dr. Rudd has tweeted out both the current renderings and a fly-over.

Re: “Mid-South Mindfulness

I'd agree that many forms of Buddhism are "relgious", like Western religions, which I define as "you're required to accept some beliefs without thinking for your self". I spent 13 years as an adult Christian and can 'testify' to the downside of relgion. After seeking for 3 years, I found Thich Nhat Hanh's teaching to be the complete opposite of religion. The teachings do not require belief, but instead, point to Truth, where the practioner is encouraged and basically required to think for themselves. Thich Nhat Hanh's teachings on mindfulness are positive, inspirational, sound, and above all, Truthful. I'd suggest reading any of Thich Nhat Hanh's teachings, and see if they ring True for you.

Re: “University of Memphis to Begin Constructing Land Bridge & More by Year's End

Does not really look like a "land bridge" any more. Looks like a lightly landscaped pedestrian bridge. Maybe it's time to change the label in line with (no doubt) budget driven redesign?

Re: “A Policy That Stinks

I would expect an experienced elected official like Heidi Shafer to have more perspective than this.

For disclosure, I am a citizen who lives in unincorporated Shelby County who has voted Republican in many recent major elections. The change by the City of Memphis is something I fully, 100% support. Furtherance of development funded by Memphis for development outside of Memphis is fueling money towards a potential Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the City of Memphis, much as drastic, unresearched-based deannexation that consider's no opinion of the voters within those areas.

Should Memphis declare bankruptcy, it is the property values in Germantown, South Cordova, Collierville, Lakeland, Arlington, Millington, and unincorporated Shelby County that will plummet. Business will not move to those suburbs and will not be attracted to the entire region. Elected leaders who have no perspective on this are a major part of the problem.

Heidi Shafer, please educate yourself on these issues which are important to us as your constituents.

Re: “Memphis Bids for Amazon's HQ2, Will Offer $50M Incentive

Reid- are you joking about the character of the offer?! Have you not scene the incentives being offered by cities far larger and more prosperous than our own? My gut reaction was that the local incentive package is far too paltry- so much so that I wonder if Amazon will even notice.

I do agree that such offers becoming the norm across the country is a very negative thing.

Well as long as it has basketball and football training facilities to prepare the students for the real world ahead.

Re: “A Policy That Stinks

No city taxes=no city amenities.

Seems legit.

It's about time suburban freeloaders started wiping their own asses.

Re: “A Policy That Stinks

Can someone give her an eighth grade civics course? County should be spending money inside Memphis, whose taxpayers pay most of county tax revenues, and if these sewers are so important to county coffers, it should have no problem paying for them.

Re: “Memphis Bids for Amazon's HQ2, Will Offer $50M Incentive

I dunno...doesn't it look immediately desperate to throw out a bid like that? It's sad that offering a huge bribe has become a normal way of doing business.

Re: “Mid-South Mindfulness

It always bothers me when someone obfuscates science and religion.

Psychiatry is supposed to be a science.

Buddhism is very definitely a religion.

Religions don't cure mental illnesses.

They cause them.

Re: “Harris Ends Period of Lengthy Deliberation, Will Run for County Mayor

This is great news for our County. I have worked with Senator Harris on several projects - he brings out the best in the people he works with. Organized, decisive and effective - great combination.

Re: “Animal Fighting Enforcement Act Fails

As Mr Laughlin points out, the snuff film business brings in money to the community, not just to the motels where the films may be shot ( yes I get it) and the cafes for the last suppers (after all we are Christians) but also the cleaning services and refuse companies. Thank God that Donald J Trump is opening up the business world again and as soon as we can get tax breaks for our ever increasing talent searches (coming to a town near you) the snuff film industry will return to the status our founding fathers intended.

Re: “Brooks Leaders Consider Downtown Location

I'm hearing it's already been decided, mainly due to Overton Park Conservancy unwilling to cede any land to the Brooks, and Pitt Hyde money. Mr Hyde has a great art collection, and the Brooks has not got room for it. So if we have any sway over the Conservancy, which works for the Greensward, but against the Brooks, time to exert it!

Lee Harris has just been called a loon by people who gather in large groups to play dress-up.

Re: “City Officials: All Legal Remedies Will be Exhausted Before Confederate Statues Come Down

What is "unjust" and what is "right" is in the eye of the beholder. Harris is a loon. The Memphis Parks Commission had virtually stopped maintaining Forrest Park YEARS AGO, resulting in the Sons of Confederate Veterans taking over the maintenance. They have records to prove this. UTCHS maintains it by mowing now. Citizens To Save Our Parks paid for the flowers and mulch this year & hand pulled weeds & roots from the beds. Harris knows Forrest Park cannot be fenced & closed to the public because it is a cemetery which falls under TN state laws & the descendants must be allowed ingress, egress & regress to the burial sites.
