  • Lee's Legal Bills Denied

The City Council's MLGW committee voted down a resolution approving the release of more than $426K in legal bills for former MLGW head Joseph Lee this morning.

The full council already voted against the measure in October, but then the minutes of that meeting were pulled after chairman Myron Lowery suggested a compromise of a lesser amount.

  • Memphis Drivers Are The Best!

Hard to believe, but in the early 1930s, a Texas businessman named B. Lee Torrance visited Memphis and told a reporter, "[Your city] has the most careful drivers I ever saw. They sure obey the speed limit, too."

Based on that observation, I think we can safely say that: 1) Mr. Torrance was insane ...

  • Obama's Moderation is Not a Surprise

The unsurprising moderation of Barack Obama has caught many people by surprise. At this point, he seems intent on restoring a version of the old Clinton presidency — Hillary Clinton running foreign policy, Robert Rubin's ensemble running the economy, Bill Richardson at Commerce and nary a certified "cut 'n' runner" on Iraq anywhere in sight ...

  • Bianca Knows Best ... And Helps a Third Wheel

    Dear Bianca,

I've been the third wheel in my best friend's relationship for several months. When she got her new boyfriend, he seemed great -- easygoing, kind of funny, and not too shabby-looking.

But after a few months, he moved in with her, and now they're inseparable ...

  • Sole Restaurant Now Open Downtown

After a brief close, the restaurant in downtown's Westin Hotel has reopened with a new executive chef (Matthew Crone), a new name (Sole Restaurant & Raw Bar), and a group of not-so-new owners from Interim in East Memphis.

"We are bringing something different to a fantastic location," says Ben Brock, Sole's managing partner. "People will see big changes in the restaurant's food."....

  • Griz Lose Again: Iavaroni on Hot Seat?

The Grizzlies blew a double-digit halftime lead to fall 111-103 to the then 1-16 Oklahoma City Thunder. It's the team's 10th loss in their past 11 games, and one that could have head coach Marc Iavaroni feeling the heat. Chris Herrington considers the coaching situation in his post-game report at Beyond the Arc.

  • FROM MY SEAT: Tigers Go Bowling with Sixth Win of Season

Say this for University of Memphis football coach Tommy West: he knows how to close a regular season. His Tigers beat Tulane Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Bowl, 45-6, to finish West's eighth season with a record of 6-6. The win clinched a bowl berth for Memphis, the program's fifth trip to college football's postseason in the last six years (and three more than the program had seen before West's arrival in 2001).
