My grandad worked his way to manager here in the late 70s and stayed so until it closed. He talks about how sad it was considering at how well it payed and he loved it there. He never knew the exact reason fro closing but it was rumored that they produced a huge stock of tires with the wrong compound and it was such a big costly mess that it caused it to close. After that, he worked for MLGW for 30 something years as a meter reader and customer service, even have a VHS tape of his group known as the "Poe Folks" from the 1980s. Not sure how the organization worked. He's now retired.
