Re: “Renewing Juvenile Court

Our juvenile courts are doing the best they can with what they have. Unfortunately, they give a rat's about due processand rule of law. But,in fairness, the caseloads don't allow time and haven't been given the tools to respect it. Rule of law aside, our Shelby County Juvenile Court has more impact and accomplishes more for the citizens, young and old, than all the other courts in this city combined. We could not function without referees unless we replaced them with a different system; for example, one that provided mediation and education. That is not to agree with the short sighted comparison of referees to divorce referees and magistrates who set bonds. Our current system is much the court of the omniscent deliverer, and unforunately, takes itself seriously as such. To the other degree however, we our fortunate to have a man of acceptable character and integrity at the helm, for the moment. We have much important work to do to improve our current system.
