Re: “Broadway Coal Company

There was a Broadway Coal and Ice business directly behind the left and center field fences of the Negro League ball park Martin's Stadium. The coal yard was located next to the railroad tracks with the entrance on Lauderdale Street, north of Crump Bouleverd. My sister and I walked past it every Sunday on our way to First Baptist Church directly across the street from Booker T. Washington High School. Our home had a coal fired furnace for heat and an Ice box on the back porch. Broadway delivered coal through a coal chute to our basement and an iceman would deliver a block of ice and place it in the bottom of our ice box. In 1952, my family purchased a Norge refrigerator and installed two gas fired floor furnaces using gas from Memphis Light Gas & Water, thereby eliminating the need for Broadway's services.
