Re: “Andy Wise is Now on WMC-5's Side

Wow i am amazed you go through and read all of these. I have a story concerning the towing of handicapped vehicles (with legal placards) that is happening at 3rd street and floyd alley. On satellite it appears that orange barriers are set up to block an area by a fence that says "tow zone". However last Sat nite our family had a Easter reunion weekend that included a Redbirds game. My husband (who had a spinal cord injury and is handicapped, though not wheelchair bound) dropped us off and parked (we had pkg pass for toyota lot). He apparently saw this spot open, with another handicapped vehicle parked next to it and assumed it was a valid parking space for the handicapped. Needless to say, when we left the game his car was towed by D and J towing co. I went around to the parking garage and spoke with the female attendent who said that she just said it was "wrong, wrong, wrong" and pointed me to her superviser -Dennis Johnson. He stated that "my client requires me to call a tow truck within 15 minutes of people parking there". I asked who his client was and he said Parkway Realty. I called the tow company while my husband who now has arthostatic hypertension and a multitude of other serious maladies sat on the curb. The tow company said I could pay the $125 tow fee plus $50 for someone to open the lot and come pick it up. I explained that we had no other handicap vehicle to transport us and that we were basically stranded. They acted like they were doing me a big favor and said they would tow it back to me for another $100 bucks more. They got my credit card number and I said FINE> About 10 minutes later, they called back to say that "their driver was only willing to meet me at the MAPCO on Danny Thomas due to Grizz traffic." Are you kidding me??? I told them if i could get there, i could get home. I got the message too bad thats all we are willing to do or you can pick up your truck monday after Easter. Thankfully I caught a friend David Popwell crossing the street. I was so upset I couldnt even talk. He agreed to inconvenience himself and his family completely to drive me through traffic to the Mapco. My husband and his son, wife and 3 kids sat on the curb on 3rd street through this entire event. I had to call 3 times while at Mapco because we waited over 45 minutes. I could only imagine if i had been in a cab, or if my husband actually was still wheelchair bound (my fatherinlaw Dunbar Abston Jr was with us at this event and he, in fact, is wheelchair bound with Parkinsons and not in good health- what if this had been him?). For the last 5 days I have been trying to get to the bottom of this and something is seriously fishy. The supervisor for Pkwy Realty will not return my call. I couldnt get Connie?? to return my call - left 3 voice mails. I finally called an operator and spoke with a Nancy McMullen who said this doesnt happen very often. Are you kidding me///This should NEVER HAPPEN. The handicapped signs are very deceiving...she said they pointed to the handicap entrance. I started to wonder how often it really happened. Apparently a LOT> I confronted the owner of D&J towing who kept saying i was making a serious accusation....And, I am. Dennis Johnson and D&J towing and whoever else are making money towing Handicapped people for gosh sakes. Really??? There were policemen patrolling all around any of whom could have been alerted to make an announcement at the stadium rather than towing a legit handicapped person. This should be against the law....Handicapped people are NOT looking for close parking because they are is because it is a necessity which is why they have to get legal placards. Please contact me if you need anything further because I promised myself that I would DO MY BEST TO MAKE SURE that NOT ONE OTHER handicapped person has to go through that HELL!!! (901)299-9430 is my cell and I have spoken with witnesses to this illegal venture. Jennifer ABston
