Re: “Wheel Tax Solution for County MATA Funding Off to Shaky Start

Thanks for including the vote totals. I think that the mayor is giving it a yeoman's shot. However, it is a structural problem like pulling teeth blindfolded. Just saying. Folks talking about addressing poverty WITHOUT a functional mass transit system. Please.

Re: “Reaping the Whirlwind

We hear this over and over, "elections have consequences," but I guess that they are empty words until you elect someone like Trump. He is as a former football coach stated in an interview about another, "they are who we thought they were,' or something on that note. President Trump is who he says he was. He is simultaneously refreshing and dehydrating. I feel as lonely as I felt election night, if not worse, but I have moved on.

What I think that many do not get is that fact that many of these Republicans know that this could be the end of the world as they know it. First of all, they will be dead and gone if that is the case. Second, some of these people think that it is God's will anyway.

The truth is that Democrats and liberals don't want to take responsibility that even with an absolute ogre running for the most powerful position in the world, their machine was not able to defeat him. He pretty much insults everyone except white folks angry at "the others," and unhappy with their present life circumstances.

Frost spoke about the world ending in fire or ice. The question now is whether it will end because of color or cold.

Re: “MATA Wants Feedback on New Routes and Route Changes

Made a call to MATA, 274-6282. I asked to speak to a supervisor. He asked the nature of my call and told me that a supervisor was not available. I told him that I wanted to speak to a supervisor over some concerns that I had regarding an operator, scheduling changes, etc. I was placed on hold and subsequently, the phone disconnected. I called the office number listed on their website. I made the call around 10:00 a.m., spoke to a representative and told that either the person who is currently handling customer service as manager will be calling me back or she--the same manager--would direct someone to call me. I will report here when the call is returned and the results of the call.

Re: “MATA Wants Feedback on New Routes and Route Changes

I agree for the most part with your statements, however the city leaders in the last 30 years have not shown a commitment monetarily to mass transit in our city. There have been recent talks of a sole funding or revenue source like a gas tax. That would definitely be very helpful. The issue is that no one can trust to get to work on time unless they leave maybe two hours ahead allowing for bus breakdown. Passengers have very little confidence in the system. "Tote the note" car lots have done good business because of that confidence while Memphis has the best water, but some of the worst air in the U.S. The fact that the head of your service was cruising for prostitutes and caught helps to put a fragile operation on the brink.

I've noticed rushed training of new operators (bus drivers) that you have to help with their route. This is not altogether new but my mother has complained about the bad attitudes of NEW operators. She rides more often than I do so I will have to believe her. Apathy seems high from some of the workers and many of the passengers. I know the operators that I look forward to riding with and the ones that I cringe when I see them behind the wheel. I was on the bus last Saturday and a woman driver bypassed a man on a cane at the bus stop waiting for the bus. She also bypassed a family that was running toward the stop but I was told that the operators are not required to stop for those passengers. Turns out, that she was trying to get to the terminal because she was about to get off of work as there was another operator waiting to relieve her.

MATA has to be looked as a start-up firm that uses a lot of capital to regain the confidence of citizens here that they can get to an appointment or to and from work on time. This would take a lot of money and time because the same Saturday that I witnessed the unfortunate behavior by the operator was the same day that the bus did not show up at all on my way from my mother's house. I cut her lawn the day before and decided to spend the night. She gave me some advice at to where to walk to a bus stop that I could catch a different bus. When I inquired as to what happened to the bus I was waiting for, the bus driver nor the CSRs at the North End Terminal knew. The nice CSR made some calls and only then did I know that the bus broke down.

Normally, on Saturday if you miss a bus it could take an hour to catch the next one. This does not endear riders to the organization called Memphis Area Transit Authority.

Re: “MATA Wants Feedback on New Routes and Route Changes

If the 50 is low performing, I would love to see how they define, "high performing" and what routes meet that description. I rode the 50 Poplar today. The eastbound bus was late so I caught the medical center bus and walked over to Poplar. I got a ride to Home Depot on Poplar. Once my refund was received at HD, I waited for the 50 Poplar bus as it was on time on my way to the Memphis Public Library. On my way home, and traveling west, I waited for it in front of the Memphis Public Library and it was late.

I got off the bus at Poplar and Cleveland to go into Kroger to shop. After shopping, I missed the 50 as it was on time. I waited for the next 50 Poplar and it was late. Because it was late, I was unable to make my connection to the bus that will directly take me home. I had to wait 25 minutes inside an air-conditioned facility, North End Terminal, with my frozen items. The 8 was on time and air-conditioned. Once leaving, it takes 5-7 minutes to walk home. It is hit and miss noticeably whether you will ride on a bus that is air-conditioned.

Unfortunately, my bus route will be changed again in less than a year's time. The 8 was changed in the last route change. The last change meant that iInitially, He did not have the air-condition on until he saw us opening the windows in the back of the bus.

BTW, the downtown library's air is not working. Sad to see our public servants working under those conditions. From there my ride today on the 50 began.

I've ridden the 50 Poplar at times in which it was dangerous for riders and passengers because of the crowded buses. I do not ride the bus every day, thank God. Consequently, I do not know whether that has changed. Both 50 buses were well attended by riders. I rode the bus from around 11:00 and made it home around 5:00. Really sad that our city isn't more embarrassed by the terrible public transportation system that it offers to tax paying working poor citizens.

No city, of this size, should call itself a major city with public transportation like the one that we have.

Re: “Teller Admits to Taking Over $200,000 from Bank

I am just curious as to how you publish a story like this and not include the "who" in the story and not comment as to why the name and picture are not shown. What's up with that?

Re: “MATA May Restore Part of Crosstown 31

So if you work, you can possibly ride the bus to work but you are on your own as far as getting home. Terrible that those folks are treated that way.
