Interesting thread...
I have worked for both the Consortium MMT and the Memphis Music Commission so I think I have a unique perspective. Both do very different things and offer valuable resources to the music community.

The Memphis Music Commission helps developing local talent gain a broader local audience. Memphis Music Monday at the Hard Rock does a good job of exposing new artists to live audiences and is a valuable tool for artists promotion and in helping artists gain a local following. Stax Fresh Trax gives local artists the opportunity to hear honest, and sometimes painful feedback from consumers, fellow musicians and industry experts about their music. This feedback helps artists decide what direction go in with their music projects. They get to find out which tracks are hits and which are duds. Ideally, this feedback would be representative of the market. However, without proper publicity for SFT, the audience feedback is often limited. The Memphis Music Commission also could do a better job of connecting local artists to well paying gigs and performance opportunities. I worked on this while I was there but it was not part of my "official duties" and was often done on my own time. I also think The Memphis Music Commission could also do a better job of vetting the musicians it offers a platform to for both Memphis Music Mondays and Memphis Music Revealed TV. Currently, the only criteria is that the musician does not use profanity. Setting the bar low, in my opinion, diminishes the Commission's value as a promotional platform. The Commission should be promoting the best in local talent. Also the Memphis Music Commission seems be under utilizing the skill-set of it's executive director. Johnnie Walker has high level music industry marketing and promotion experience, but there is currently no funding allocated to the Memphis Music Commission that allows her to put her expertise to use by taking the music of Memphis artists to radio stations across the nation. She has, however, done an excellent job of utilizing local outlets to promote local artists, with relationships with local television and radio outlets. Though most of the outlets are not mainstream, many artists are getting radio play that would not have gotten it without the Memphis Music Commission's programs.

The Consortium is focused on rebuilding the local music industry through grooming talent and building the necessary infrastructure. No one else in Memphis has more expertise in these arenas than David Porter. The relationships the Consortium maintains with performing rights organizations, radio executives and label heads is unmatched by any other organization currently in Memphis or preceding it in recent decades. The Consortium also offers mentoring to artists and producers from working industry experts, including many Grammy award winners and international celebrities. The relationships that the artists accepted into the Consortium's programs are able to take advantage of are not offered by any other organizations locally. The crux of the Consortium MMT's programs is an appreciation for the SOUND of Memphis music and it's pioneers. Each artist accepted into the Consortium MMT's programs is expected to continue in a legacy of greatness and given all the resources to do so including classes, equipment, feedback and mentoring. The relationships, both established and developing, of the Consortium MMT's leadership and staff help generate investment in the local music business industry that is unsurpassed by any other organization past or present. Memphis Music has a financial value. No one understands that more than David Porter and George Monger and they are both working diligently to re-establish the industry that brought great wealth into the city and gave extremely talented and under under-resourced artists international platforms and legendary music careers.
Memphis leadership needs to embrace the history and legacy of Memphis music and stop trying to re-write it. I think the Consortium is necessary and is bringing the vision and expertise that has been the missing link to rebuilding a thriving music scene in Memphis.
