Re: “Strickland‘s Amen Corner

What Bruce said. I would add my puzzlement that so much is being made of a single sentence that does not cite any polls as evidence for anything but merely makes a very indirect allusion to the existence of polls (yes, private ones) and implicitly expresses a quizzical attitude toward them by suggesting that they should be corroborated by other data. In this case, the potential backup data is the openly expressed support for a given candidate by 30-something highly respected and highly vocal men and women of the cloth. That amounts to something of an informal "poll" in its own right. I cannot believe that Professaor Velsasco would dispute either the credentials or integrity or sincerity of these men and women, whose opinion could well be taken as proof of a measure of Strickland support in the African-American community (which is all the singled-out sentence says).

Re: “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

I risk blowing open the vault by saying that, improbably, the movie has a happy ending. Or, as fellow enthusiast Diane Cambron put it on Facebook, this is the feel-good movie of the summer. That would seen impossible, but it's true, because Tarantino.

Re: “Rebuilding the Shelby County Commission

As the story about the May 1 election indicates clearly, Milton is unopposed in his primary but in the general election, will face an independent. This is Ms. Vontyna Durham White, who will receive due mention in stories about the District 10 race in that election.

Re: “Weekend Review: Confederate Statues Loom Over GOP Debates

Randy, the "equating" you're complaining about was implicit in the remarks of the three Republican gubernatorial candidates who debated here, whose main case for leaving the Confederate monuments alone was that they were examples of bad history not to followed in the future and should have been left up as "reminders" of a course not to be followed.

Re: “Round One: Shelby County Primaries Election Guide

My bad. My faulty memory was based on the fact that Mr. DeSaussure was regarded as next in line in clerk's office and had consensus support among Republicans.

I agree. I didn't write that caption.
