Akron/Family, Warpaint

When: Fri., Feb. 26, 10 p.m. 2010
At first thought, the pairing of freak-folk Brooklyn band Akron/Family and girly L.A. crooners Warpaint is perplexing. Best known for their amorphous brand of unruly folk, which incorporates psychedelic elements alongside household noises and good, old-fashioned yelling, Akron/Family is difficult to place in relation to the hazy, restrained, and sleepily retro sounds of Warpaint. While Akron/Family’s catalog ranges from extended celebratory sound riots to more hushed pastoral ballads, spontaneity remains their key quality. Warpaint, with sweeping chords to back their drowsy vocals, are all about control. But following a group of moody girls with a bunch of rowdy boys should make for an interesting dynamic. Akron/Family and Warpaint play the Hi-Tone Café Friday, February 26th. Showtime is 10 p.m. Admission is $10.
