Re: “Letter From The Editor

Truth for sure. A fetus is or is not a person deserving of legal protection. Simple question; complex answer.

It's not a scientific question, it's a legal question. Alan Keyes very effectively compares abortion to slavery, and some commentators have noted the president's penchant for taking out (killing) suspected terrorists rather than capturing and questioning (torturing) them. If they are innocent, is murder more moral than torture? But how to adjudicate; ahh, the lawyer's dilemma. Fine distinctions.

And a philosophical and moral question (loosely, the rules upon which law would be based.) And a case of relative rights vrs absolute rights; mother inconvenienced, child, or child to be, dead. We all have our opinions, The key is to recognize that's all they are, opinions, and those opinions, like legal opinions, are not truth, not absolute, and are subject to change for many reasons.

People die all the time for various reasons, children of all ages among them. Is that tragic? I don't know, but i think we should give more than passing thought about abortion because it might be. And if it is, we are not who we think we are nor whom we posit ourselves to be.

Re: “BULLETIN: Lt. Gov. Ramsey Threatens State Takeover of MCS

Ramsey's wrong on this one. The only way to approach the problem is to fire all the children running the Memphis City School system and have the comparative adults in county leadership (er, uh, that would be the Republicans) take over the whole mess and just start over. The democrats failed in the city of Memphis; Let the Republicans in the county give it a shot. It's a thankless job and I can understand why they don't want it, but somebody has to stand up. Republicans in Nashville, or Republicans in Shelby County. I don't want to hear a lot of complaints because you got what you asked for either...

Liberals! Give me a break. They just always do this.

Re: “Stand-Up Guys

Gee, a Tea Party version of "we won" Obama fame. Not so fun the other way round is it?

But seriously, unions of government employees is a bad design easily (and often) abused. The time has come to rationalize government and constrain them. Really, liberals are afraid of the power of large corporations (me too, by the way) but government is the biggest and most powerful corporation ever. That's hardly a solution. The tea party has it half right, restrain government, the most dangerous of all powerful organizations. They will learn later how to use a scalpel to control corporations as well.

Re: “Turning the Page

The financial feedback loop of unions is well understood. Dues --> democratic political campaigns --> legislation favorable to unions by democratic representatives. The only player left out of the decision loop is the taxpayer. That's distinctly different from unions a private companies because if the price goes up, customers can fire them. That's not true of government. So, government unions are a bad idea. Nothing to do with taxing the poor and giving to the rich, it's just an architectural design flaw that must be eliminated. Those other concerns are unrelated and must be handled separately. Don't confuse the issues here.
