An Evening with Molly Ringwald 

Eighties icon Molly Ringwald is singing at the Buckman this week. She'll probably even close out her set with a loungey interpretation of the Simple Minds song "Don't You Forget About Me" from The Breakfast Club soundtrack.

That shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. Ringwald, who spent five seasons as Anne Juergens on ABC's The Secret Life of the American Teenager, rose to fame as the star of John Hughes comedies like Pretty in Pink. But even before she appeared with Mrs. Garrett and the gang on the '80s-era sitcom The Facts of Life, Ringwald was singing with her dad, jazz pianist Bob Ringwald, on Disney's New Mickey Mouse Club and making records for the House of Mouse.

"I'm probably not as good as I should be," Ringwald candidly told the Flyer when she last toured through Memphis in a production of the musical Sweet Charity, exuding all the sincerity and discomfort that made her the poster child for teenage awkwardness. She said she'd stopped her vocal training when her movie career took off and didn't pick it back up for years.

Inspired by vintage artists such as Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, and, yes, Simple Minds, Ringwald has released Except Sometimes, a collection of jazz standards and the song that played in the background while the Breakfast Club filed out of their magical Saturday school detention.

"An Evening with Molly Ringwald" is Thursday, January 16th, 7 p.m., at the Buckman Arts Center at St. Mary's. Tickets are $35.
