An Evening with The Felice Brothers

When: Sun., April 25, 10 p.m. 2010
Though the Felice Brothers hail from upstate New York, they’ve visited Memphis several times. Which is fitting, as the band’s style of grungy folk injected with rambling storytelling sounds right at home here. Flannel-clad and often barefoot, the Brothers jump, dance, and bang on whatever they can find to make noise. Most importantly, they wail — sometimes in unison, always featuring a variety of soloists. Surrounded by droning chords, the Brothers sing sad songs with undertones of raw hope, transforming dark, haunting lyrics into rousing anthems of strange joy. Though only a couple of the Felice Brothers are actually Felice brothers, the name captures the camaraderie of the band’s music — a spirit that tends to reverberate beyond the stage at their concerts. The Felice Brothers play the Hi-Tone Café Sunday, April 25th. Doors open at 9 p.m. Tickets are $13. — Halley Johnson
